EU Referendum

On Friday the 5th July the Conservative Party backed a parliamentary Bill which would guarantee a referendum on Britain’s relationship with the European Union.

Damian said: “It is clear that many people locally are concerned about the levels of immigration in the UK, and about the shift in power away from our national parliaments and the government to the European Union. Immigration is down a third since 2010, but more and faster progress needs to be made.

“I was in the House of Commons to support the European Union Referendum Bill which safely cleared its first parliamentary hurdle. This Bill would guarantee a referendum on whether Britain should stay in or come out of the European Union. I believe that we should all have our say on this important issue. Our relationship with the European Union has to change.

“The EU has become too centralising and taken too many powers away from the nation states. For me any question of our country stating in the EU, would have to be based on a new deal, where our relationship was more like the one we had with the Common Market we originally joined in the 1970s.”
